Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions substitute with yellow or red onions
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter can substitute with olive oil
For the Sauce
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise Greek yogurt or sour cream can be used
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup consider barbecue sauce as a substitute
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard Dijon mustard or spicy brown mustard as alternatives
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder fresh minced garlic can be used
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper white pepper can be used as a milder option
For the Patty Melts
  • 4 patties Chop House by Holten Angus sirloin steak burgers use your preferred beef patties
  • 8 slices thick-cut sourdough or rye bread gluten-free bread can be used
  • 4 slices medium cheddar cheese substitute with American cheese
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese Gruyère makes for a gourmet substitute

Method
 

Caramelize Onions
  1. Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a cast iron skillet over low heat. Add thinly sliced large sweet onions and cook for about 30 minutes until golden and caramelized.
Prepare Sauce
  1. Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, garlic powder, and ground black pepper in a mixing bowl. Stir until smooth.
Cook Burger Patties
  1. Wipe the skillet clean and reheat over medium-high heat. Melt another 2 tablespoons of butter, then cook the burger patties according to package instructions.
Assemble Sandwiches
  1. Spread sauce on one side of each slice of bread. Layer caramelized onions, a hot burger patty, cheddar, and Swiss on four slices. Top with remaining slices, sauce side down.
Grill Sandwiches
  1. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet over medium heat. Grill assembled sandwiches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
